Most controversial beach in Sitges?
For years Balmins Beach (Cala Balmins) has been a nudist (although unofficial) beach, enjoyed by families, gay guys, and youngsters. However more recently neighbours of the area have complained of some 'hanky Panky' and the town hall decided to try and promote the beach as a family beach. This of course has caused even more controversy and public attention!
We lived right in front of this beach for 6 years and we never saw anything too offensive, however I must add that a neighbour of ours did become completely obsessed with monitoring the beach and was always out with his camera... ???
We have always enjoyed the beach and Emilio, who runs the chiringuito and sun bed hire, is always friendly and polite to his customers. The beach is split naturally into 2 coves; the first cove is usually full of naturist families and the second is more populated by the gay community.
We like nothing better than to enjoy a leisurely lunch at La Caleta (which is situated at the entrance to the beach) and then collapsing on Balmins for the rest of the afternoon/evening to soak up the rays.
La Caleta serves many high quality fish dishes and, in our opinion, one of the best paellas in town. They are also famous for their 'Calamares Balmins' - small squid stuffed with a giant prawn, covered in rock salt and then grilled. They also do a great homemade burger.
There is also a kids play area nearby for when the little ones get bored!
